Solar Panel Cleaning

Greater Sydney

Your Sydney panels are leaking kWh. We get them back.

Between construction dust, gum and wattle pollen, bushfire smoke drift and concentrated cockatoo and pigeon droppings, Sydney is one of the worst soiling environments for rooftop solar in the country. We clean with pure deionised water and soft carbon fibre brushes, the only method that restores production without voiding the warranty on your SunPower, Enphase, Tesla, LG, REC, Trina or Jinko system.

The Brief

Everything worth knowing.

Straight answers, no fluff. Read what applies to your home, skip what doesn't.

What Sydney soiling actually looks like

Sydney panels build up in layers. Fine basalt and clay road dust bonds to the glass during dry spells. Spring wattle and gum pollen adds a sticky film that holds everything else in place. Bird droppings from cockatoo and pigeon roosts bake into acidic concentrated spots under the summer sun. Anywhere within cooee of active construction, Rouse Hill, Riverstone, Camden, Rouse Hill Heights, throws silica-heavy grit into the mix. And when bushfire smoke drifts in from Gippsland or the Otways over summer, a carbon particle film settles across the whole array. Each layer compounds the last.

Your monitoring app already told you there's a problem

Enphase Enlighten and SolarEdge log inverter production every hour. Pull a year-on-year comparison on a clear-sky day and if you're seeing a 10–20% gap that your AGL, Origin or Powershop bill backs up, soiling is the most likely culprit short of a shading change or inverter fault. CSIRO and international field studies measure 5–25% production loss from soiling in high-dust climates, and Sydney qualifies. Most customers see the output bounce back on their Enlighten dashboard the same day.

Why soap voids most tier-1 panel warranties

SunPower, LG, REC and most other tier-1 manufacturers spell it out: cleaning agents, detergents and abrasive materials void coverage. Two reasons, surfactant residue alters the anti-reflective coating on the tempered glass over repeated applications, and dodgy rinsing leaves a thin film that actually attracts more particulate. Deionised water, stripped to near-zero total dissolved solids, leaves nothing behind, no residue, no spotting, no interaction with the coating. It's the only medium the manufacturers approve. It's the only medium we use.

The gear that lets us clean from the ground

A soft carbon fibre bristle brush on an extending water-fed pole means we clean from the roof surface or from a ladder at eave level without ever standing on the panels. Walking on solar panels, even with shoe covers, introduces microcrack risk to the photovoltaic cells. Microcracks don't show up straight away; they degrade over time and create hot-spot failures your monitoring app eventually flags but that are expensive to diagnose. We stay off the glass.

Free visual inspection while we're up there

Every visit includes a no-charge visual inspection: cracked or delaminated glass, hot-spot burn on the backsheet, junction box corrosion or drip staining that suggests a seal failure, shading creep from tree growth or new structures cutting into previously clear roof, and racking hardware that has shifted or corroded. We document it with photos and hand it over straight. We don't do electrical repairs, but we'll tell you exactly what to pass to your CEC-accredited installer.

How often Sydney panels actually need it

For most Sydney residential jobs with moderate tree cover and no active construction next door, an annual clean lined up with the tail end of pollen season in late spring handles the whole year. If you're within half a k of active construction, near agricultural land through Wyndham, Whittlesea or Casey, or in a high-bird-pressure area (the cockatoo corridors along creek reserves and pigeon-heavy inner-city rooflines are a very Sydney problem), semi-annual is the call. The monitoring data makes it an objective decision, not a guess.

Bundle with a roof clean for better economics

Our crew is already up there. A soft wash roof clean on the same visit gets rid of the moss, lichen and organic debris that sheds onto the panels between cleanings and blocks your gutters. Bundling drops the mobilisation overhead and keeps the panel surface cleaner for longer, because the source material above has been sorted. It's a practical argument, not a sales pitch.

Solar Panel Cleaning FAQ

Answers before you ask.

Does cleaning solar panels actually improve their performance?+

Yes, dust, pollen, bird droppings and grime block sunlight reaching the cells, and clean panels generally perform closer to their rated efficiency than dirty ones, particularly after Sydney's pollen-heavy spring or dusty, dry spells. The performance gain varies by how dirty the panels were beforehand and location, but many homeowners notice a difference on their generation figures after a clean. Panels near busy roads or under trees tend to get dirty faster.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Sydney?+

Most Sydney homes benefit from solar panel cleaning once or twice a year, though homes near busy roads, under trees, or close to bushland with dust and pollen may need more frequent cleaning to maintain output. Coastal homes can also see salt film buildup that's worth checking on. Your inverter app or monitoring system is a good way to notice if output has been gradually dropping.

Is it safe to clean solar panels yourself?+

Climbing onto a roof to clean solar panels carries real fall risk, and using the wrong equipment or harsh chemicals can scratch panel coatings or void manufacturer warranties. Professional cleaners use soft brushes and purified water systems designed specifically for solar glass, and carry insurance for roof work. For most homeowners, it's safer and more cost-effective to have it done professionally.

Will solar panel cleaning void my warranty?+

Cleaning itself generally won't void a warranty, but using abrasive tools, high pressure or harsh chemicals not approved by the manufacturer can cause damage that isn't covered. Reputable Sydney solar cleaners use manufacturer-appropriate soft brushes and purified water systems specifically to avoid this risk. It's reasonable to ask your cleaner what method and products they use before booking.

Do solar panels need to be turned off before cleaning?+

Yes, as a safety precaution most professional cleaners will isolate the solar system before cleaning panels directly, reducing any electrical risk while working with water near the panels. This is standard practice and shouldn't take long to switch back on afterward. Always check your cleaner is comfortable and experienced working around live solar systems.

Can bird droppings and dust really reduce solar output that much?+

A build-up of bird droppings, dust or pollen sitting on part of a panel can create shading that disproportionately affects output from that section of your solar array, more than the dirt's coverage area might suggest. This is a common issue for Sydney homes near trees or with local bird activity. Regular cleaning helps prevent hotspot issues developing on shaded cells over time.
